The Amazing Race
The Amazing Race is a reality television game show.
Our managers co-working with the company First Field were responsable for all the preparation for episodes 6 and 7 of the 17th season of the reality “Amazing Race” in Saint-Petersburg.
Location scouting in Russia (Saint Petersburg): We made a list of over 20 locations, which are typical for Russia and for Saint Petersburg. The main idea was to show the best of the city finding places of interest where is possible to make a quest or a contest for the participants of the reality.
Logistics: We had 15 cars with drivers rented for this project. Our managers were 24/7 monitoring their routes. Well planned and well organized logistics helped us to spare a lot of time. Filming in Saint-Petersburg you always have to pay attention to traffic jams and to the openings of the bridges (open bridges make almost impossible the access from one part of the city to another – keep this in mind planning night shootings).
Staff: We provided 40 english speaking administrators.
Customs: We helped to import equipment and props using carnet ATA.
Castings: We found musicians, actors and crowd scene. An orchestra at the circus, 20 piano players, 4 clowns, an actor performing the role of a film director, amazingly nice “babushkas” working at the potato field, a bear riding a motorcycle, etc.
Permits: To organize a legal filming in Russia is quite hard, but we did it. We had to get over 70(!) permits from different authorities: Committee of culture, Committee of law, Committee of transport, Committee of roads and bridges, police departments, fire departments, district administrations, owners of buildings, private security services etc. (on our site you can find an example of a production bible, containing all this papers).
Location management in Russia (Saint Petersburg): For two shooting days we had 19 independent filming sets with administrators and security. Generators, catering, crowd scene, etc.
About Amazing Race:
Created by Elise Doganieri and Bertram van Munster, the original series has aired in the United States since 2001 and has earned twelve Primetime Emmy Awards, including every award from 2003 to 2011. Emmy-award-winning New Zealand television personality, Phil Keoghan, has been the host of the show since its inception. The show has branched out to include a number of international versions following a similar format.
The production of The Amazing Race is a challenge due to its premise being a race around the world. Among the difficult duties that producers face, scoping out locations, designing tasks, selecting teams, and planning logistics for the entire course are the most important to accomplish in pre-production. During the Race, the camera crews need to keep up with the movement of the teams and the host. And when the footage for the entire season has been recorded and edited, team members, production crew as well as the local staff who hosted or facilitated the tasks are obliged to keep the details of the race confidential and not leak out anything that hints at locations, events, or outcomes of the Race.
